Its the bridge between Delta state and other states of the south east, beginning with onitsha Anambra state of Nigeria.

The bridge is overworked. Commuters on a busy day can stay in traffic more than three hours. On Friday 10th September 2021, I travelled from Port Harcourt Rivers State to Irrua in Edo State. The bridge was a terrible experience. We stayed three hours trying to cross the bridge. We were stuck in traffic from 5: 52 pm till 9:05 pm. The army and police officers were just busy extorting drivers on the same busy traffic. However, on Sunday 12th September 2021. The traffic was free. Simply because it not a business day. I pray the second Niger bridge gets completed quickly.

This is about the oldest and yet strongest Bridge in Nigeria. The Bridge is 50yrs old and yet kicking. It is the busiest highway and passage way in the whole of Eastern Nigeria, even in whole of Nigeria as it is busy every minutes even as you read this. The Bridge is looking at the evernewlooking crossbar support pillars and rails. Age is telling on this faithful giant and so it needs very urgent help because of very regular heavy traffic.

Crossing this bridge, whether from Asaba into Onitsha or vice versa, is a horrible experience every single time. No exceptions. Heavy traffic with drivers spending hour upon hour waiting in place, no moving. Trailers, trucks, buses, and cars...everyone taking chances, cutting corners with reckless driving. Broken down vehicles, with repairs done on the bridge...never towed away. Thugs with big sticks extorting and intimidating truckers and one way drivers. Police, soldiers, and traffic personnel more concerned with collecting bribes than with order and security.

Since it’s construction in 1965, and it’s subsequent commission by the then Prime Minister, Late Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, shortly before his assassination, this small bridge as it appears to me has stood quiet and courageous amidst the heavy traffic that traverse its approximately 1.4km length. The economic growth of Nigeria at present and the movement of economic goods and services across the south to the west/north calls for an urgent need for another bridge. This need is sharply seen when one is stuck in traffic on this bridge, some times lasting between thirty minutes to an hour and thirty minutes.I will conclude quickly that the Niger bridge had served its purpose in the old Nigeria, but can’t sustain this new Nigeria, it is better considered as a one way road rather than a double lane, hence the need for another bridge.

This has thus inform the government to start the construction of the second niger bridge so that the first bridge will not be over use as this is the only connecting bridge to Anambra state.
