I visited for the first on a Felabration week so it was extremely rowdy. Still, it was clear that Shrine, as its commonly referred to, is a vibe! There is a community of people there that remain in touch with indigineois Nigerian music artists and whatever fusion of genres they were currently experimenting with. Decades later, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti continues to have such a strong influence on the present generation of musicians. The palm wine was great company too! πŸ˜‰

The new fela shrine, located on the Ikeja axis of Lagos State is a popular place where daily activities go on and was built in commiseration of the legend Fela Anikolapokuti, where he is celebrated annually in an event known as Felabration. The place is a home to various set of people and other businesses.

Crowded sometimes. Actually, crowded when theres a show or Femi wants to perfom, tickets will be sold as well. Go on Thursdays or Sundays to enjoy yourself. If youre a more private or coded person, visit the roof top at Kalakuta instead.

An iconic place for the legendary Afro neat star. The kalakuta republic as foundly called by his followers. This place is more of a museum or tourists center. You will always feel the energy and vibes as there is never a dull moment. If you need pure and real Afro music this place is your best bet.Try and attend one of the annual show felabration and feel the undiluted rhythm of Afro beats

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic places and a must visit when you come to Lagos. Its cultural centre and unarguably the freest place on earth. Also known as Kalakuta Republic the birthplace and centre of Afrobeat excellence hosts upto 2000 guests during events. The New Afrika Shrine was the home of the great legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the originator and father of the popular music genre which has produced the likes of WizKid, Burnaboy, Dede Mabiaku, Femi and Seun Kuti amongst many others. The Shrine in has lot of cultural and political history behind it and a sort of sanctuary to many. In 2019 alone, the Shrine hosted 2 world renowned personalities such President of France Emmanuel Macron, Boxing heavy weight champion Anthony Joshua. The popular time to enjoy the African Shrine is Thursday nights and the entry fee is moderate. You will experience music, culture and art at the finest. The New Afrika Shrine also holds its annual Felabration musical festival playing hosts to global musical icons during the week long event. So what are waiting for...

Femi Kuti performs live on stage on Sunday evenings between 8pm and 11pm, ticket is 500 Naira. Thursdays are free days to watch Femi Kutis rehearsals. Get there early to book a nonsmoking seat. Drinks are not expensive. A few fierce looking young men around but they neither fight nor steal (ground rule at the shrine).
