My experience here was mind blowing and sad all at once. Having to visualize all the struggles our ancestors went through all in the name of being held captives is just an experience I believe everyone should have. The museum has real life sculptures and even voice simulations making it look like theyre real and I could almost see myself in there. I remember paying #500 per person to assess the museum, but I learnt the price can vary depending on if theres Nepa light or how many people are being taught at once. Pictures are strictly not allowed once inside and I support this strongly. Thus pictures Ill share are just around and outside the museum. There are instructors who would explain every piece you come across and heaven bless them because they dont get tired. Im a very curious person so Im surprised my questions didnt tire them out. There is a larrrrgggeee boat inside of there that had enslaved people arranged in layers and that one had me tear up. They also sell nice history books and films there. I highly recommend. I however believe that the visitors should not have to bother about light when visiting a museum (Nepa/generator problem should be resolved internally) that was the only turn off for me.
Slave Trade Museum is located inside Marina resort in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State. Personally, my visit there was insightful and very fun. They have very well organized protocol to help you understand the history of slave trade, coupled with staff with great wealth of knowledge to tell the stories. I was also able to get other hard copy materials (books and dvd disc).
Place is falling in value. More can be done to make it more attractive.
Easy to access. Located in a resort, with other site attractions.Rich historical portrayals, with realistic sculptures, pictures, drawings and illustrations including real life artifacts. Audio impressions also.Frankly, one of the most impressing slave trade museums Ive been in.The building can however use an upgrade.
A good place to be to know our history
The place is very historical n it will be good if everyone could at least visit once. But the whole story got me emotional
Nice place to learn on the history of our people
Happy to be there, I have wonderful time with colleagues ,what a beautiful place
Not too bad
Exciting nd beautiful
An informative trip to this place. Its a great place to know the history of Nigeria. I liked the place very much and I am glad I visited. The boat ride to the place was a little bit scary but also fun!!
If you want a place to learn about the history of slave trade in Calabar, this is the place. If you want to relax and enjoy the cool breeze of the Riverside, this is the place. The pictures in the museum are awesome. The audio sounds great and looks so real. I am never tired of going there.
The place is cool. Talks about the history of slave trade in Calabar. A friend of mine told me that she cried when she went there for the first time. The sculptures look real and they actually have some of the whips & chains that were used on the slaves back then. They dont allow taking of pictures inside sha and gate pass is N200
Good for site viewing
Shows alot of our history
Great museum
If you want to know what really happened during the slave trade era, you can visit this museum! Photos are not allowed here but the experience is worth it and the Access Fee is very affordable as at the time(August 2019) of the visit it was ₦300(Just Under a dollar). Youll see real live simulations with audio visuals of some of the events that happened during the slave trade era! Great place to be if you want to learn about the dark days! I suggest you visit whenever youre in Calabar, you wont regret it!
Pros: The museum artifacts and art is great. On the tour, I love how tourists experience the discomfort of the heat the slaves experienced. Its surreal to stand in a building that once housed slaves as cargo.Cons: The tour guide spoke just above a whisper and many of us could not hear her, despite asking her to speak up. I suggest tour guides invest in microphones.
This has got to be one of the best slave museums I have visited. The art here literally comes to life. They have been able to recreate dummies that look real and they also attached voice-overs for each section. The tour guides are passionate and knowledgeable. There is an entrance fee of not more than 500 Naira. It is a must visit if you are in Calabar.
The museum was really enlightening for me as the tour guide explained the slave trade era in details. I was initially scared seeing the sculpted representations of the Slaves (you have to take a second look to know they weren’t cadaver); we were shown the different scenes representing different eras during the slave trade period, as well as how the slaves were auctioned and sold off
Nice place
Wow... Awesome museum... Takes you back to history, to show you want our fore fathers when through in the hands of the British colonial masters.
It was fun
Around it has a Cinema building...the slave trade museum is a well educated place... You will surely learn a lot.
Enjoying my stay very friendly and nice staff, very calm and clean good food
Loads of history on the slave trade that took place within the southern part of Nigeria. Ancient pictures and artefacts to educate one on the slave trade era. Worth experiencing
Nice
What a nice place, but it will be fine to allow people to snap pictures
Still portrays its Essence
Impressive storie About the historie of slaverie.
Very insightful and most realistic museum I have been to.
History is fully recorded with artifacts and other items that are exhibited. The Curator gives you a clear explanation as to events that occurred. The environment is pretty good and there are places to sit and relax.
A place that is gradually going into oblivion. Poor maintenance culture. However, it still reveals a lot of what slave trade did to Africa
Its a nice place to visit with family.
In real time its suppose to be more beautiful and attractive, more Memoires need to brought back there

Museums telling the story of slavery are always poignant. It is a good thing that this museum exists. The visit started well but in the end the guide was on fast forward, so he just turned off the light once we arrived souls in the last room! 😂😂😂 you could say that I was not happy at all. After a few weeks in the country, I understand better the challenge of those who use power generators. Its a shame that the visit is shortened for things like that because the museum is still not free, 500 N entry. Its worth a visit because it helps to know a little more even for those who already know. Local government should still invest a little more means to give it more cachet.
