St Anthonys Hospital is located at Etche Rd by East, off of Ngwa Rd by East, and directly opposite the Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Aba, Abia State. From stories I heard, the Hospital was one of the best in town, a time when they had whites as well as indigenous doctors who were more concerned about saving lives. While Ive never been hospitalized here, growing up, there are peculiar memories about this huge hospital that appeals to you even as a child.First is how big the place is. Next is the throng of people miling about, most of who came to see their sick relations. There was the fruit lady just by the gate with her wares of mostly banana and groundnut because you cant go to see a sick person empty handed. You could also see those on admission or their relatives from the window as you wslked past. Occasionally youll see people who have been discharged going home with smiles on their face. All these slowly but surely changed. I cant say why or when exactly, but it just did, as Im sure everyone else noticed. The place came to be synonymous to the meeting point for people leaving to bury their dead. Their mortuary appeared to be more functional than the hospital itself. More and more people became skeptical about being admitted there, even the proud student nurses who trained there consequently reduced. The banana lady was no longer there! All these can be attributed to the terrible state of the road which deteriorated quite horrendously, poor management, or a list of many other things, but lets hope for their sake that theyve effected a program for change.
